KMUD has teamed up with the Center for Car Donations to provide a way for supporters to donate an unwanted vehicle, raise funds for Redwood Community Radio, and get a tax receipt for their donation.
It's simple, too. All you have to do is call 877-411-DONATE, (877-411-3662) and a friendly driver will come and pick up your vehicle and give you a tax receipt for your donation. You may also use the handy online form below, and you'll be contacted within 24 hours.
Tax receipts are for the year in which the car was donated. Donations can be made any time. More information is available by calling 877-411-DONATE.

Does my car have to be running?
Not always. It does have to have an engine and be towable. It varies from state to state and depends upon the year, make, and model of the vehicle. Sometimes if the cost to transport a vehicle will cost more than what it will bring at auction, it may be declined. Call our toll free line to find out if your vehicle qualifies.
Does my car have to be registered?
No, but you must be the legal titleholder.
What if I lost the title?
You must obtain the title prior to donating it. Contact your local DMV to obtain a duplicate title.
Where do I sign my title?
Our driver will instruct you of the proper place to sign your title. You may have to sign a power of attorney authorizing us to transfer it. Our driver will let you know what is required or call our toll free number, 877-411-DONATE (3662) to speak our representative.
What kind of paperwork will I receive?
You will receive a tow receipt when the vehicle is picked up. Thirty days after the vehicle is sold, you will receive an acknowledgement. If your vehicle sells for OVER $500 you will receive IRS Form 1098 B & C.
How much can I take for my donation?
Effective 2005, if the value of the vehicle is over $500, the taxpayer is limited to deduct the amount for which the vehicle sold. In such a case you will receive a Form 1098 B & C within 30 days of sale. If the vehicle sells for under $500 you will not receive IRS forms as you are not required to file them for vehicle donations up to $500. What will happen to my vehicle?
Your vehicle will be picked up by one of our courteous drivers and sold at auction. Cars are usually sold within 30 days of pick up. Some vehicles may take longer.
Is there a tow fee?
No. If you are out of our towing range, we can offer you the option to drop the vehicle off at our auction house at your convenience.
Are all cars sold at auction?
No. Occasionally, cars that are donated do not sell at auction. In those cases, the vehicles are sold for scrap metal.
Will I be notified when it sells?
Yes. If the vehicle sells for over $500 you will receive IRS Form 1098 B & C. If not, you will simply receive an acknowledgement as required by the IRS.
How soon can my vehicle be picked up?
Vehicles are picked up at a time that is convenient for you. Our representative will take all pertinent information regarding your donation, and forward it to our tow company. They will call you within 24 hours to set up an appointment. If you have not been called within 24 hours, please call 877-411-3662.
What vehicles do you accept?
We take cars, boats (if they are on a trailer), motor homes, trucks, motorcycles (if they are operational), farm equipment, and recreational vehicles such as snowmobiles, jet ski, etc.) Call our representative to find out if your vehicle qualifies.
There are several great reasons, like:
1. You don't want to worry about selling your vehicle.
2. It is too expensive to repair your vehicle.
3. You don't trust your car to be safe on the road.
4. You need a tax write-off.
But the most important reason is that your donation will help us continue to bring you the radio programs you love and depend on!

KMUD Bylaw Amendment Proposals
Underlined words are proposed new language; stricken words are language proposed for deletion (except for Proposal #5, where existing and new language are presented).
Proposal #1) State law requires elected reps on boards to be removed from the board (when necessary) by a recall election by those who elected them, with very few exceptions. These exceptions all involve attendance problems or court actions. Years ago the Board created a Recall Policy that provides for this, but the Bylaws still state that the Board could vote off any Board member. That would be illegal, for those board members elected by Members or Programmers. Therefore we propose this revision:
Article VIII. Vacancies and Replacement of Board Members
Section 3. A two-thirds majority vote of the full Board is necessary for removal of any Board member from a Board Officer position, or of any Board member for attendance reasons as stated above, or of any Board-elected Board member.
Section 4. With very few exceptions (see SECTION 1 ABOVE AND California Corporations Code Section 5221, which specifies certain court actions which can be cause for removal), removal of a Director elected by the Members or Programmers can only be done through a recall election. Such a rRecall election of a Board members by the constituency represented shall be conducted allowed within 30 days of receipt of a petition by the Board Secretary, signed by 25% of the programmers or 10% of general members, requesting the recall of one or more of the current directors. A committee of three Board members whose recall is not being sought shall be appointed to oversee the recall and subsequent election of a new representative. (See Policy Manual.)
Proposal #2) This change is non-substantive. It attempts to clear up the confusion the Board encountered last fall over the meaning here of “constituency” when referring to the Board-elected seats: these Board members do not “represent the interests of” the Board members. So we’ve eliminated the word “constituency” in favor of “appropriate electors.”
Article VIII, Section 5. If any Director’s seat is vacated with one year or less remaining in that term, the Board shall appoint a replacement. If any Director’s seat is vacated with more than one year remaining in that term, there shall be a special election by the constituency represented.appropriate electors (which, for the Board-elected category, means the Board).
Proposal #3) This change is substantive, but only adds language that already governed the Board in this regard. It puts Article X in conformity with California Corporations Code Section 5150:
Article X. Amendments and Ratifications
Section 1. Amendments to the By-Laws or Articles of Incorporation shall be presented to the Board at a regular meeting, to be voted on at the next regular meeting. which adversely affect the voting rights of Members or Programmers must, after a ballot is approved by the Board, be voted for by a majority of the voters of that constituency who return their ballots.
Section 2. All other amendments to the By-Laws or Articles of Incorporation shall be presented to the Board on the agenda at a two consecutive regular Board meetings, to be voted on at the next regular meeting.shall be ratified when and voted on at both meetings, and at subsequent meetings if not resolved by the second meeting. They must be approved by a two-thirds vote of the entire Board.
Proposal #4) This change is slightly substantive. It brings the section up-to-date with the station’s current practice, namely changing the name of the CABs (formerly called Community Advisory Councils, CACs) in line with CPB usage, and allowing for more than one regional CAB. And it corrects the source of the requirement for a CAB.
Article XIII. Community Advisory Committee Boards
Section 1. One or more A Community Advisory Boards Committee for this corporation shall be appointed and maintained in accordance with the requirements of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. state law. The President shall appoint CAB members, the committee, subject to the approval of the Board.
Proposal #5) The main purpose of these changes is to clearly state that Programmers who are also Members may vote in both elections. Almost everyone we have asked has stated that this is how it has been done for many years. We’ve never heard of a process where the membership list was edited to remove Programmers before ballots were sent out. Ballots were definitely sent to programmers in the Members’ Election in 2001. So if we were to change this practice, the programmers would need to approve that change by majority vote. It’s important that the bylaws be made unambiguous about this.
Attorney Michael Veiluva of Walnut Creek verified that there is no law preventing us from defining our governance system in this way, with overlapping sets of voters for board members.
We also propose removing the phrase “All members have the same rights and privileges.” It’s not true – some Members are board members, for example. We define in the bylaws the rights and privileges Members receive – voting.
Proposed new language (existing language appears below):
Article II. Membership
Section 1. RCR is a membership-based organization. A “Member” is any real person who has paid at least the basic or sliding scale annual fee, or completed an approved exchange of service in lieu of fees. The Board of Directors shall determine the dollar amounts associated with the various categories of Membership. Each Member is entitled to one vote in Member elections.
Section 2. Members who are also Programmers are entitled to vote in both Member elections and Programmer elections.
Section 3. No Member shall have any right, title, or interest in any of the property or assets of RCR, nor shall such property or assets be distributed to any Member upon dissolution of the corporation.
(And, throughout the Bylaws we propose to capitalize Member and Programmer when they are used according to the bylaw definitions of these words. This will help a LOT. We’ve also received the good suggestion that we always use “Director” instead of “Board member” so we propose that to the Board as well.)
Article II. Membership
Section 1. RCR is a membership-based organization. A “member” is any real person who has pledged to support KMUD and paid at least the basic or sliding scale annual fee, or completed an approved exchange of service in lieu of fees. The Board of Directors shall determine the various categories of membership. Each member is entitled to one vote in Member elections. All members have the same rights and privileges.
Section 2. No member shall have any right, title, or interest in any of the property or assets of RCR, nor shall such property or assets be distributed to any member upon dissolution of the corporation.

By simply clicking on the "Download" link your browser will start downloading the file and after a moment will start playing it. You could listen to the whole show in this manner if you like. Once the show is all downloaded you could go to your browser's File menu, and choose Save As, enter a name and a location, and save the file to your computer's hard drive.
However, you might prefer to do the following to download quickly: Mac users can hold down the CTRL key while clicking the mouse on the "Download" link then choose the "Saved Linked File" (it might also be called "Save Link") option from the pop-up menu. Windows users should right-click and choose "Save Target As..." to save the file.
Podcasting lets you automatically receive the latest episode of your chosen program as soon as it's available. You need to "subscribe" to receive a podcast, rather like you might subscribe to a magazine and get it delivered each week. In order to sign up for a podcast you need a piece of podcast software usually available free of charge (iTunes, Juice, and Doppler are popular examples. Click here for a list of podcast software). This software will check for new episodes and automatically download them for you. Instructions for subscribing to Podcasts will vary with the software but in general the steps you follow will involve copying the podcast's link (PC users: right click the Podcast Button and select "Copy Link Address," Mac users: hold down the control key, click and select "Copy"). Then paste the link into the subscription field of your podcasting software ("Add Podcast" or "Subscribe to Podcast" in most software).

Redwood Community Radio announces an opening for a new KMUD Board Member to be appointed by the Board at its August meeting. The nomination period is open now and continues until August 21st. Nominations can be emailed to: boardelections - at - kmud.org. Board terms are three years.
HD Radio™ Technology upgrades broadcast radio from analog to digital. Broadcasters that upgrade to HD Radio Technology can provide consumers listening with HD Radio enabled receivers many benefits that improve their listening experience: CD-like digital audio quality and useful data services such as real-time traffic, iTunes Tagging and Artist Experience are just a few examples. Today, there are more than 2,100 stations serving local markets across the country with HD Radio Broadcast Technology. In addition to the upgrades to the original primary channel – the HD1 – HD Radio Technology enables broadcasters to create extra FM channels on the radio dial. We call these HD2/HD3 channels and today more than 1,400 HD2/HD3 channels are available in radio markets across the country, thereby providing consumers more diverse listening options than ever.
HD2/HD3 channels are found adjacent to a radio station’s traditional location on the dial. These channels provide a wide range of new, diverse content and often provide expanded coverage of the content played on the primary HD1 channel. HD Radio broadcasts are available subscription free. Only an HD Radio enabled receiver is required and there are many choices. A couple of models will be available from KMUD in the very near future. On 12-27-2011, at approximately 9:15 a.m. a Humboldt County Deputy Sheriff was driving north on US 101 near Fernbridge Drive, Loleta when he witnessed a 1994 White Mazda Protégé weaving on the highway. The deputy ran a registration check on the vehicle which revealed the registration was expired. The deputy activated his emergency lights to stop the vehicle for the traffic violations. The vehicle yielded to the deputy after it took the Singley Hill off ramp where it stopped. As the deputy approached the vehicle on foot to make contact with the driver, the vehicle sped off at a high rate of speed. The deputy was able to look at the driver and passenger before they fled. The deputy pursued the vehicle with his lights and siren as the vehicle drove onto Loleta Drive, and into the town of Loleta. The vehicle reached speeds of over 80 mph in a 25 mph zone and ran several stop signs to evade the deputy. The deputy terminated the pursuit in the interest of public safety.
Shortly after the pursuit was terminated the Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center was notified by a citizen the car was now parked on Park Street, Loleta The deputy located the car and a female walking away from the vehicle. It was the same female who had been in the passenger seat. The driver had fled on foot. The deputy searched the vehicle and found a loaded .44 magnum handgun with the serial numbers removed under the front passenger seat, along with an 8” long double edged dagger and a syringe. The female passenger, Nachel Black, 33 years old of Arcata was arrested for interfering and resisting arrest, along with possession of loaded firearm in a vehicle, possession of firearm with the serial numbers removed and possession of an illegal weapon. She was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility, where her bail is set at $25,000.00. The deputy through his investigation and a tip from Rio Dell Police Department learned the driver of the vehicle was Christopher Glen Mell, 31 who is on active parole.
The Sheriff’s office issued a be-on-the lookout (BOLO) for Mell to all local law enforcement agencies, and contacted his parole agent. Mell is wanted for felony evasion; felon is possession of a loaded handgun, felon in possession of ammunition and carrying a loaded firearm in vehicle.
Christopher Glen Mell is further described as: White Male, 31 years old, strawberry blond hair, blue eyes, 5-4, 150 pounds.
