California Marine Life Protection Act Initiative Announcement

Who: Interested members of the public
What: The public is invited to participate in training sessions to learn how to use MarineMap (http://northcoast.marinemap.org), the MLPA Initiative's online mapping tool.
* Learn about how MarineMap is used in the marine protected area (MPA) planning process
* View data currently available for the north coast
* Learn how to view and provide feedback on MPA designs
These training sessions will be offered remotely so that you can participate in your own home or office by accessing the meeting online (a webinar) and calling a toll-free conference line. A phone line, computer and internet connection are needed for full participation in the training.

THERE IS HEAVY SNOW AT IRON PEAK, and at most peaks in northern
mendocino and humboldt counties. Residents in the Iron Peak and Spy
rock area of Northern Mendocino should know that heavy snow CAUSED A
GENERATOR FAILURE AT THE REPEATER SITE.
VERIZON HAS A SNOW PLOW ENROUTE BUT THEY SAY IT COULD TAKE 8-HOURS
TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEM, hopefully reinstating phone service by
tomorrow, Thursday, Jan. 21st.
RESIDENTS IN COVELO AND LAYTONVILLE CAN USE THEIR CELLPHONES TO CALL
9-1-1 IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY.
HOWEVER LAND LINE CALLS FROM COVELO AND LAYTONVILLE TO 9-1-1 WILL
NOT WORK. CDF is sending emergency personnel to the area to assist
911 calls.
THE MENDOCINO COUNTY DISPATCH CENTER SAYS COVELO AND LAYTONVILLE
RESIDENTS SHOULD CALL 463-4086 TO REPORT EMERGENCIES UNTIL THE SNOW
PLOW CAN REACH IRON PEAK AND FIX THE PROBLEM AT THE REPEATER SITE.
Again, that emergency number for covelo and Laytonville residents is
707-463-4086.
ANYONE ELSE IN THE COUNTY THAT HAS TROUBLE REACHING 9-1-1 CAN ALSO
CALL THE 463-4086 NUMBER AS AN ALTERNATE TO REPORT EMERGENCIES.
Known Road Closures:
Hwy. 128 at the Mendocino Sonoma County Line is blocked by a
landslide, plan accordingly, locals have access, but travelers need
to plan alternate routes.

At 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 10, 2010, Humboldt County and the cities of Arcata and Eureka held a joint press conference regarding the earthquake experienced locally on Saturday, January 9. The press conference was attended by Congressman Mike Thompson, Assembly Member Wesley Chesbro, and elected representatives of the County and the City of Eureka as well as staff of the County and cities. Information presented at that time includes the following:
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services is continuing to gather damage assessment information. After a 24-hour operational period, the county’s preliminary assessments are as follows:
On 1-8-2010 at about 2039 hours, Officers were dispatched to the 200 block
of Humboldt Street to a reported shots fired call. It was reported to the
Eureka Police Dispatch center that three (3) shots had been heard, followed
by a large amount of yelling.
Upon arrival Officers located a single male subject down in the roadway and
several subjects physically fighting. The down subject was unresponsive and
bleeding. A Eureka Police Officer administered life saving efforts, until
medical personnel arrived. However, the subject succumbed to his wounds
and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hum. Co. Sheriff asking for help with homicide investigation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Sheriff's Office is releasing the name of today's homicide victim. Robert B. Van Alstine, 30 and transient, succumbed to his injuries today at about noon.
The Sheriff's Office is asking for help from the public in this investigation. Mr. Van Alstine was a white male adult, about 5'8" tall and weighing 170 pounds. He had long brown hair and green eyes. Mr. Van Alstine had several distinctive tattoos including an "anarchy" symbol on his neck and a vertical stripe over his right eye. Anyone with information about Mr. Van Alstine or this case should call Detective Troy Garey or Sergeant Wayne Hanson at (707) 268-3639.

DMV OFFICES WILL BE CLOSED FRIDAYS NOV. 6, 13, 20, 2009
Sacramento - The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) reminds customers that all public offices will be closed on Fridays Nov. 6, 13 and 20, 2009, in keeping with the Governor's Executive Order S-13-09.
The Department offers a number of online services through its website (www.dmv.ca.gov) including payments for vehicle registration and driver license renewals via secure debit transactions, filing a notice of release of liability, change of address, and scheduling appointments.
Customers can also effect transactions via the telephone by calling (800) 921-1117. For registration and driver license renewals, customers must have their six-digit Renewal Identification Number (RIN) that accompanies their renewal. Automated services are also available at 1-800-777-0133.
Motorists who have a registration renewal date that falls on Nov. 6, 13, and 20 will have penalties waived until the next business day.
