Free Fishing Day in California -- July 4th, the DFG will waive the fishing-license requirement for residents age 16 or older. People will have the opportunity to fish on all freshwater and ocean waters in California. Details at dfg.ca.gov/licensing/fishing/freefishdays.html
The Fort Bragg police department, in cooperation with the Fort Bragg Coalition for Gang Awareness & Prevention, has announced a formal survey to help assess the community’s perceptions and concerns related to gangs in Fort Bragg. A press release from the Fort Bragg police states that this research is vital for producing statistics that can be used in grant applications. Hard copies of the survey have been distributed through the mail with the city’s water bill. A recent news story on the California Report and on NPR's Morning Edition talked about KMUD and the CLMP (Civil Liberties Monitoring Project) reports broadcast on this radio station. Listeners to the story may get the impression that all local law enforcement would like KMUD to stop airing these citizens observations.
At an April 14, 2010 forum by the League of Women Voters, the two candidates for Sheriff of Humboldt County were asked about their stand on these reports. Here is an excerpt from that forum, with the question and answer. Neither candidate seemed to think the reports present much of a problem.

Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies and Officers from the Eureka Police Department responded to the Safeway store at 2520 Harris Street last night after a robbery was reported there. At about 10:45 p.m. a man approached a cashier and demanded that she empty her register. The suspect was wearing a black ski mask and was holding a handgun. The cashier complied with the suspect’s demands and placed the money in a plastic grocery bag. The suspect then fled from the store through the west exit.
A witness who was in line at the register reported seeing the suspect enter the store prior to donning his ski mask. The witness identified the suspect as Ezra Williams, who is a suspect in seven robberies within Eureka City limits.
Williams is a white male adult, 26-years-old, about 5’5” tall, weighing about 140 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes. He has several tattoos including one on his neck that reads “Outlaw” with accompanied by skulls. He also has a one-inch scar on his forehead.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is looking for two men who entered another man’s house, assaulted him, and stole several items. Last Tuesday, March 23, 2009, at about 3:15 p.m. a man reported he was awakened in his Carlotta residence by two men. The two men assaulted the victim, causing injuries that included a broken arm and lacerations that required stitches. The suspects made several threatening statements to the victim, took several items from him, and then left the house.
