Update on Jacob Newmaker shooting case Featured

Written by

On Thursday, December 13, 2012 edition of the KMUD Local News, Cynthia Elkins aired an update on the an incident that occured on March 16, 2012 resulting in the death of a Fortuna man at the hands of the Fortuna Police.

KMUD News Cordinator, Elkins introduces this update by noting, "The police shooting death of Jacob Newmaker was apparently caught on tape, and the attorney representing his family says it shows his death was unjustified.  Two Fortuna police officers were involved in the incident, which occurred in March of this year.  Fortuna residents reportedly called police saying a man was banging on their doors and windows at about 6 o'clock in the morning.  Police say they identified Newmaker as the suspect, fleeing on a bicycle.  The police version of the story says Newmaker was combative and threatened the lives of officers.  Attorney Dale Galipo sees it differently.  He says he’s been the attorney in 300 to 400 police shooting cases, and says this is one of the most blatant he’s handled that was captured on video"

Additionally, according to information received by KMUD News, the case is being heard in federal court in Oakland.  There's a case management conference next month to set the trial schedule.  Attorney, Galipo, expects a trial date will be set for sometime next year.
