According to a press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office, dated Dec. 7, 2012:
On 12-7-2012, approximately 4:00 a.m., the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office was notified by the Redwood Memorial Hospital that a gun shot victim was brought into the emergency room. A citizen had found the victim “staggering” on State Route Highway 36, near Bridgeville at a turnout, and transported the victim to the hospital. The victim is a 24 year old white male who resides in Hydesville. When deputies met with the victim he told deputies he could not remember much. He said he had hitchhiked out to the Bridgeville area from Hydesville, on 12-6-2012 during the day. He had three different people pick him up and provide him rides. The victim has provided little information so far to investigators. The victim is being treated for a non-life threatening injury. The case is still under investigation.

According to a press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office, dated Dec. 4, 2012:
On 11-28-2012, approximately 5:00 p.m., the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a missing person identified as Bryan Balcom. Deputies responded to the Balcom’s home in the 6800 block of Rohnerville Road, Hydesville and met with a female relative. The relative told the deputies she left town on 11-20-2012, and when she returned on 11-28-2012 Balcom was gone. She had no idea where he went. Deputies interviewed neighbors who told them they had not seen Balcom since 11-20-2012. Deputies located Balcom’s car keys and driver’s license in his residence. His vehicles were also at his residence. Balcom has medical issues.
Balcom is described as: 51 years old, 5’8” tall, 180 lbs, green eyes, brown long hair. Last seen wearing tan shorts and a pink shirt.

According to a press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office, dated Dec., 3, 2012:
On 12-3-2012, approximately 7:00 a.m., the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office was notified of an armed robbery which just occurred at the 76 Gas Station, 1980 Central Avenue, McKinleyville. When deputies arrived they met with the male employee. The victim told deputies he was alone in the gas station when two males entered via an unlocked rear door. The males were wearing black masks and gloves. One of the males had a dark colored handgun which he pointed at the victim and immediately ordered him to give them all the money from the safe. After the victim gave the suspects the money, he was ordered to lie on the floor. The employee was not injured during the robbery.
The suspects are described as follows:
- Suspect #1 – White male adult, 6’1 to 6’2”tall, thin build, black hoodie sweatshirt, black mask, black gloves, armed with dark colored handgun
- Suspect#2- male, thin build, 5’ 8” to 5’ 10” tall wearing a grey or white hoodie, dark mask.

According to information received by KMUD News from Pacific Gas and Electric, dated Dec. 3, 2012:
PG&E crews worked through the night last night and made good progress restoring power to most of the PG&E service area. Today’s focus will be on moving crews to the harder hit areas where restoration efforts have been impacted by access issues. The goal is to have the vast majority of our customers restored today, but there will likely be some customers without power until tomorrow morning.

According to a Weather Statement issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on Wed. Nov. 28, 2012:
The current weather system in Northern California has triggered a "High Wind Warning", in effect today (Thurs., Nov. 29, 2012) from 3 am to 8 pm., PST, and a "Flood Watch" effective through late tonight. This hazardous weather outlook is for northwest California.
The release goes on to warn that: "Large trees and large branches will be knocked down by this storm....and can be deadly when they fall onto cars or people. Avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors, if possible. If you must travel, slow down to provide more reaction time in case the road is blocked by a tree."

According to a press release titled, "Message from Office of Emergency Services - Weather Shift", from the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office, dated Nov. 27, 2012:
A major shift in the weather pattern will bring wet and windy weather to all of Northern and Central California beginning midweek and lasting through the weekend and into the beginning of next week. Heavy precipitation is expected across northern portions of the state with high rainfall rates first on Wednesday then again on Friday into Saturday. Urban and small stream flooding will be common, even extending into central California. Regarding main stem rivers, this event will be the largest of the season to date, and rapid rises on some rivers can be expected, but for the most part remain below levels of serious concern. Meanwhile mud and debris flows are possible especially near areas burned during recent wildfires.
The press release goes on to indicate that the flood control reservoirs seem to be in excellent shape and further states that: "This storm sequence should wet basins down pretty well, making subsequent events much more effective, and the long-range guidance suggests that the storm door is remaining open."

U.S.Coast Guard photo above shows the area of Big Lagoon State Park- site of search for three people swept into the ocean.
According to a press release from the U.S. Coast Guard, dated Mon., Nov. 26, 2012:
The Coast Guard suspended its search for the 16-year-old who was swept out to sea from a beach near Big Lagoon State Park on Saturday (Nov. 24). At 12:40 p.m. on Saturday, the Coast Guard received notification from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s department that three people had been swept into the ocean. Group Air Station Humboldt Bay dispatched an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter rescue crew and two 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crews from Station Humboldt Bay to search the area.
Upon arriving on scene, the Coast Guard was advised by the Sheriff's Department that two bodies had been recovered, and that a 16-year-old male was still missing. Crews searched the six-square mile area around the state park by air and sea until suspending at 6:45 p.m. due to heavy fog and darkness. "This unfortunate and tragic event is a reminder of the ruthlessness and unrelenting power of the ocean here along the northern California coast," said Lt. Bernie Garrigan, the Group Humboldt Bay public affairs officer. "With the holiday season upon us and more people out for walks along the beach, it is critically important to maintain situational awareness and stay away from the surf which can quickly build and catch people off guard."

According to a press release from the California Highway Patrol, dated Nov. 21, 2012:
On November 21, 2012 a Garberville Area CHP Officer observed a green 2004 Jeep Laredo traveling southbound on US-101 at a high rate of speed through Richardson Grove, resulting in an enforcement stop north of the Mendocino County line. The Jeep's driver was identified by his California Driver's License as Luis Alonso Nolasco (DOB: 12/21/1972) from Paramount, California.
While speaking with Mr. Nolasco, the Officer recognized the strong odor of marijuana emitting from inside the Jeep. Mr.Nolasco also related that there was marijuana inside the vehicle. During a subsequent investigation, approximately 111 pounds of processed and packaged marijuana was located inside the Jeep. The marijuana was processed and packaged in clear plastic bags, each weighing nearly a pound. Mr. Nolasco was placed under arrest on suspicion of marijuana cultivation, possession and transportation for sales. The Humboldt County Drug Task Force (HCDTF) responded to the scene and assisted Garberville Area CHP with this incident.

According to a press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office, dated Nov. 12, 2012:
On 11-20-2012, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office concluded a majority of the Death Investigation of Dorothy Evelyn Ulrich, 47 years old of Hoopa. Investigators determined that Ulrich was the victim of a Homicide, and suspect Jason Anthony Warren, 28 years old, a transient, is allegedly responsible for her Homicide.
Based upon their investigation, Sheriff’s Detectives believe Ulrich was killed during the early morning hours of September 27, 2012. A silver Kia Spectra was stolen from Hoopa shortly after Ulrich’s death. Subsequently, the Silver Kia Spectra was recovered by the Eureka Police Department in the City of Eureka on September 27th, 2012. The Sheriff’s Office has submitted its case to the Humboldt County District Attorneys Office today, along with a Declaration in Support of an Arrest Warrant, requesting charges of homicide and auto theft be filed against Warren.
Jason Warren is currently in custody at San Quentin State Prison on an unrelated charge.
